I work on refactoring the BUD-ELM (Bottom-up, de novo engineered living materials) system into lactic acid bacteria. Specifically, to engineer L. plantarum to display self-interacting proteins, following a similar approach to the one used to create the original BUD-ELMs. We will introduce genomic changes to the genome of L. plantarum targeting surface proteins to introduce binding domains that will help facilitate cell-cell interactions and observe how that affects the formation of BUD-ELMs.
